The Science of the Art of Assessing Gift Capacity
Assessing gift capacity involves drawing the best conclusion from available information about a prospect's wealth, philanthropic inclinations, and affinity with the organization and its mission. This basic overview will cover the ethics of capacity assessment and will focus on generally accepted definitions and practices regarding:
- wealth indicators and where to find them in the public record
- the role of screenings and analytics
- estimatoin of "philanthropic capacity" and what it means
- partnership between researches and front line fundraisers to determine a target "ask" amount
- resources to consult and learn more . . . .
Cindy Robbins is a seasoned nonprofit leader, manager and fundraiser. She began her career in 1983 as a government contract billing clerk for an elder services organization. Since then, she has served as a grant writer, major gifts officer, grants manager, director of development, executive director, board member, volunteer and independent consultant for organizations with missions to serve homebound elders, alleviate poverty and hunger, provide public and private healthcare, present artisitc works, raise funds in the workplace, educate childhood young children and young adults, improve the environment. protect animals, and advocate for change. She has served in Texas, Georgia, New York, Indiana, Ohio and New Mexico. Presently, Cindy is the Director for Prospect Coordination and Research at New Mexcico State University. Cindy's academinc work is in philosophy. While pursuing her PhD, she quit to engage and help our communities on a more personal level. For fun, Cindy hikes in the deser with her two dogs, rides a bicycle ( a lot), plays in watercolor, islearning to be a better cook, and continues to support causes that are meanigful to her.
