The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico seeks a talented fundraiser to head up a thriving philanthropy program emphasizing major gifts fundraising. The Director of Philanthropy will play a key role in increasing investments in the ACLU of New Mexico, a dynamic, potent organization that is fighting on the front lines of today’s most important civil rights conflicts.

This is an exciting time to join the ACLU. Even before last November’s election, the organization was engaged in a $1.2 billion Centennial Campaign—the most ambitious fundraising campaign in our history—in anticipation of our 100th anniversary in 2020. With enormous threats to civil rights arising in nearly every area of the ACLU’s work, we’ve seen a phenomenal outpouring of support from new members, donors, and volunteers who view the ACLU as the nation’s principal defender of fundamental freedoms and liberties. The ACLU of New Mexico is doing its part in the nationwide struggle to defend the Constitution while working to protect and advance civil rights and liberties in New Mexico. In recent months, the organization launched key initiatives to support Muslim refugees, protect immigrants from harsh deportation policies and strengthen women’s access to reproductive health care.

Founded in 1962, the ACLU of New Mexico is an affiliate of the national ACLU.  The ACLU of New Mexico has offices in Albuquerque and Las Cruces and a staff of 21 people. Position Overview

The Director of Philanthropy, a senior management position reporting to the Executive Director, develops and oversees programs to raise funds for the ACLU and strengthen the organization’s relationships with its supporters. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Philanthropy fosters the organization’s culture of philanthropy to meet fundraising goals through a strong major gifts program with complimentary fundraising and donor cultivation strategies.

The Director of Philanthropy devotes significant energy and time to building relationships with donors and helping them fulfill their philanthropic interests and passions. The position collaborates with communications staff to share stories and develop messages that inspire donors and prospective donors and bring them closer to the organization. The Director of Philanthropy supervises a Development Associate who principally handles cultivation and stewardship events, gift recording and acknowledgement, and grant tracking.

The Director of Philanthropy will develop and implement a fundraising plan as part of an overall strategic plan promoting programmatic and organizational growth, which will specify goals for major gifts, annual support, grants and planned giving. Prioritizing individual gifts from major donors, the Director of Philanthropy will manage all aspects of the ACLU of New Mexico’s fund development program, including:


Major Gifts Portfolio:  Create and carry out strategies to expand the number of ACLU leadership ($10,000+) supporters in New Mexico. Manage relationships for a portfolio of 75-100 major donors and prospects including those assigned to the Executive Director. Secure meetings with major gift donors and prospects and engage them in face-to-face solicitations. Prepare and marshal the Executive Director, Deputy Director and other staff to build donor relationships and solicit major gifts. Plan and oversee implementation of strategic cultivation events throughout the year. Work with National ACLU Leadership Gifts Department on specific solicitation strategies of shared donors.

Planned giving: In coordination with the National ACLU Planned Giving Department, pursue strategies to expand membership in planned giving programs and cultivate existing members. Market planned giving opportunities to ACLU supporters.

Grants: Work with program staff to develop grant applications. Develop and manage tracking and reporting systems and proposal submissions. Cultivate relationships with foundations.

Mid-level donors and membership: Develop campaigns and other mechanisms (direct mail, on-line giving, etc.) to stimulate giving among mid-level donors. While most membership recruitment and all renewals are handled by the National ACLU office, the Director of Philanthropy ensures that new member lists are reviewed and incorporated into major gifts fundraising, as appropriate.

Administration: Work with the Development Associate to:

  • Ensure timely gift recording and donor acknowledgement and up-to-date donor database, including individual giving histories, profiles, interactions, etc.
  • Oversee production of reports for accounting and reconciliation of funds between the ACLU of New Mexico and the National ACLU.
  • Keep Executive Director informed of trends and key donor information. Report to the Board of Directors on development efforts.
  • Ensure confidentiality of donor information.



  • Personally committed to civil liberties principles and advancing the ACLU's mission.
  • At least 3 years of related experience with progressive responsibility and a successful track record. Preferably includes major gifts fundraising including identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual major donors.
  • Initiative and ambition to lead a vibrant philanthropy program.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence and poise.
  • Well-organized and flexible. Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience producing successful donor communication.
  • Able to work proficiently with donor database management and systems for tracking donor history, interests, and activity.
