This interactive session shows how and why fundraising "annual funds" migrated to "annual giving" and recently have shifted to "annual campaigns." Technology and donor preferences are largely responsible for this shift. Examples will have educational and non-educational perspectives.
We will discover:
- What are annual campaigns?
- Why they are important to philanthropy (especially in comprehensive or capital campaigns)
- How to reinvigorate annual campaigns
- What annual campaigns may look like in the future

Willie Romero, Director of Annual Giving, University of New Mexico
Since 1995, Mr. Romero has exclusively worked in Higher Education Annual Giving philanthropy. Fundraising and supervisory experience range includes large urban research universities, a small liberal arts Ivy League institution and private foundations associated with Universities with billion dollar comprehensive campaigns. Annual Giving gift asks range from modest to six figure investments by alumni and friends. Romero joined the UNM Foundation team in 2009 as Director of Annual Giving.
Willie holds a Bachelor of Arts is in Political Science, International Affairs from UNLV; and earned a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Globalization from Dartmouth College. During his studies at Dartmouth he attended a summer programme at the University of Oxford's Christ College. He received the Nevada Gaming Foundation scholarship and was recipient of Dartmouth's inaugural Graduate Student Community Award.
Mr. Romero has literally traveled around the world. Willie currently serves as Vice Chair for a national social fraternity foundation board and as an officer for the local and state council for a religious community service organization.
