Inspiration Through Impact: How to Build a Stewardship Plan that Works

Effective stewardship builds a population of donors who are loyal and trust that you are following donor intent.  Building a stewardship plan involves an understanding of the 4 Pillars of Stewardship and creating elements that acknowledge, report, recognize and engage donors.

This presentation will include an overview of the pillars as well as examples of stewardship pieces and events that the NMSU Donor Relations, Events and Stewardship team have produced.  The session will also include some practical tips on basic elements in creating meaningful, personalized pieces regardless of the size of your shop.

Presenter: Diane Calhoun, Stewardship Officer, NM State University

Diane Calhoun loves how her years of varied experiences and skills have all played a part in helping develop a robust donor relations program at New Mexico State University. She has worked as a Certified Public Accountant, a farm manager, and Headmistress for a private day school in the southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas areas before joining the team at NMSU in 2005.

Diane is a major advocate of investing in strong systems – much of her work at the university has been focused on developing a scholarship inventory/awarding system and fund sponsor structures that allow for impact reporting, even to successive generations.  Presently, Diane oversees the acknowledgment and reporting functions for the NMSU Foundation. Diane has presented at the Association of Donor Relations Professionals International Conference and has worked enthusiastically in community building through 4-H, Rotary International and as a Director for the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation.

A proud 4th generation New Mexican with her feet firmly planted in agriculture (pun intended!), she finds baking pastries, growing flowers and sewing provide almost as much joy as reveling in the successes of the three daughters she and husband Sam have raised.
