AFP-NM Monthly Meeting

December 14, 2017

Applying the 80:20 Rule to Fundraising, Career, and Life

Most of us have heard the 80:20 Rule—that 80 percent of our funds raised comes from 20% of our donors (though now it may be more like 90:10). The 2017 AFP NM Outstanding Fundraising Professional, Christie Baskett CFRE, will discuss what the 80:20 rule means for how we should be spending our time as fundraisers. How can we focus more energy on cultivating and stewarding those who can make the largest gifts? What do these 20% require from us in order to make the first gift or keep giving? Christie will also share stories from her 30-year career as a fundraiser and examine how the 80:20 rule has applied there. Finally, we'll discuss a few tips for balance in our lives and trying not to give work more than its fair percentage of our energy. (Did you realize a 40-hour work week is 23% of our time, yet how many of us spend 35% or more of our time on work?)

This program qualifies for one CFRE credit.

Speaker: Christie Baskett, CFRE

Christie is the Vice President for Advancement at United World College USA in Montezuma, NM. Over her 30-year career in fundraising she has raised more than $136 million for UWC-USA, The Putney School in Vermont, Greenhill School, KERA/KDTN (public radio and television), Dallas Museum of Natural History, and the Dallas Symphony.  She began her fundraising career after receiving an MBA and Masters in Arts Administration from SMU where she interned with arts organizations, including the Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation in NYC.

Christie's commitment to the fundraising profession is deep. She has served on committees and boards of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) every year since 1990. She was president of the Northern New England and Dallas Chapters of AFP and has served twice on AFP International committees. She joined the board of the AFP New Mexico Chapter when she moved to the state four years ago, and co-chaired the AFP-NM NPD Awards Selection Committee and is currently chairing the AFP-NM Program Committee.
